Croucher, Paul, History of Buddhism in Australia (), New South Wales University Press, de Jong, J. W., A Brief History of Buddhist Studies in . The history of Buddhism spans from the 6th century BCE to the sm arose in the eastern part of Ancient India, in and around the ancient Kingdom of Magadha (now in Bihar, India), and is based on the teachings of Siddhārtha makes it one of the oldest religions practiced today. The religion evolved as it spread from the northeastern region of the Indian subcontinent.

Throughout its history, Buddhism has developed a sophisticated philosophy of materiality, addressing the status of material objects and their role in the quest for salvation. This is an innovative book that addresses the ways in which Buddhism has conceived of, and dealt with, material objects ranging from the environment to everyday tools, ritual implements, icons, and sacred texts. He is more interested in the reaction of the Western world to Buddhist ideas than in the history of Buddhist studies. The most important chapter of his book for Buddhist scholars is the one which deals with the information on Buddhism which can be found in the writings of missionaries in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
